The key to MAFTEC safety stems from its overall size—designed to be larger than competing product fibers, MAFTEC provides a huge boost in safety with respect to respiration and precipitation concerns. The production of MAFTEC is precisely controlled, generating end-product diameters averaging from 5 – 7 micrometers (μm).

Respirable Fibers are small particles that, when breathed in, can find their way to the alveoli (the deepest part of the lung) and are considered harmful. The World Health Organization (WHO) specifically defines “Respirable Fibers” as a particle with a diameter less than 3 μm and length greater than 5 μm, with a length-to-diameter ratio of greater than 3:1. These harmful fibers include asbestos, typical polycrystalline fibers and most ceramic fibers. MAFTEC, with its large diameter, contains practically no Respirable material, making it a safer choice.

During the application process of any product, fiber particles scatter within the air. The longer these particles remain airborne, the greater the chance they may be inhaled. Therefore, fast precipitation—or settling—is desirable. The larger relative size of MAFTEC polycrystalline technology also makes it heavier, helping it to precipitate quickly—up to 4 times faster than ceramic fiber, and a whopping 800 times faster than asbestos fiber!

Over time, ceramic fiber can develop gaps from shrinkage, decreasing its ability to retain heat and resulting in furnace downtime, costly maintenance and lost production. In stark contrast, MAFTEC does not change on a molecular level until it melts at 3362°F (1850°C). Because the mullite molecules of MAFTEC display dramatically higher dimensional stability and resilience, MAFTEC exhibits a mere 1% shrinkage at 2600°F (1400°C) compared to ceramic fiber—which may shrink up to 13.5%.

Dense refractory linings can be heavily impacted by furnace cycling, resulting in thermal shock, cracking & spalling. Left unchecked, failure of portions of the furnace lining will likely follow—often within a few years of service. These types of furnaces have shown remarkably improved longevity when MAFTEC linings have been installed. Conventional ceramic fiber can be heavily affected by high temperatures. Maftec is pliable but tough, and shows no signs of shrinkage, thermal shock, or velocity or chemical damage—even after years of operation at high temperatures.

IMPRESSIVE INSULATING QUALITIES

MAFTEC provides significantly decreased thermal conductivity in comparison with commonly used high-heat insulation materials. MAFTEC’s uniform crystal composition contains significant dead-air space between the structures—limiting heat conductivity by preventing heat transport between trapped air spaces. MAFTEC also blocks radiant heat transmission, preventing significant amounts of infrared heat from passing through the material.

In addition to standard forms of installation, The MAFTEC veneering system, or “MAFTEC Blanket” allows for highly flexible installation options.

When affixed via the Thermbolt system, MAFTEC Blankets can be placed over deteriorated insulating brick on furnace walls/roofs without the need for tear out and disposal of the old lining, and can be secured to damaged areas with Thermbolts or ratcheted through the new hot face and into the back-up lining. No mark-outs are needed, and furnace downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.
